Little Known Traffic Rules: Uncontrolled Intersections

An uncontrolled intersection is one that is devoid of traffic lights, stop signs, yield signs or any other traffic control device or signage. Fortunately, there are few uncontrolled intersections in the Lower Mainland anymore. However, if you are traveling somewhere where you are unfamiliar with the marking of roads, you should be aware of the law governing the conduct of drivers at uncontrolled intersections.

First, it is always a very good idea to markedly slow down as you approach any intersection where there are no clear controls impeding traffic moving in your direction. You cannot just assume that there are stop or yield signs for traffic travelling perpendicular. As you approach the intersection, and once you identify the intersection as “uncontrolled”, approach very cautiously and at a very low speed. This is not the law, just a good self preservation tip.

Now comes the law:

Rule # 1 – If you reach the intersection first, you have the right of way and you can proceed through slowly and carefully.
Rule # 2 – If you reach the intersection at “approximately” the same time, as a car traveling in the perpendicular direction, you must yield to the other car if that car is to your right. Conversely, you have right of way over any car on your left.

The controversy is often over who reaches the intersection first.

My respectful suggestion. When in doubt, let the other car go first. It’s not worth the hassle.
